Public comments are being accepted on proposed changes to accessibility guidelines in the Americans with Disabilities Act for bus fleets, but those operated by public schools and private companies from home to school transportation are exempt.
Buses and vans used for charter service, however, are a different story. The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board is seeking to ensure that new, used and remanufactured buses and vans are readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities.
The proposed guidelines explicity exempt public entities that provide designated public school transportation but do include general or special transportation service, including charter service, provided to the general public on a regular and continuing basis. Private entities that provide charter service, however, would be required to comply.
